YOUNG Summer School “Youth in a Fair and Just World”

June 10th – 11th, 2024, Helsinki, Finland

YOUNG – Nordic Journal of Youth Research in collaboration with NYRIS 2024 organizes the summer school with a focus on academic writing in peer-reviewed journals.

We invite doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, interested in examining the possibilities to build a fair and just society for young people and/or together with them, bearing in mind the diversity of young people’s experiences and aspirations across the globe, to take part in two-day study sessions. During lectures and group workshops, participants will learn from YOUNG editors what happens with an article manuscript when it is submitted to the journal, what constitutes a high-quality academic publication, and how to improve writing skills. Guest lecturers and teachers, representing a variety of thematic repertoire of youth studies, will facilitate discussions and assist participants in working on their own manuscripts. The summer school aims to be a platform for early-career researchers to get to know one another, to exchange ideas and experiences, learn, and have a good time together.

To take part in summer school, please, prepare an extended abstract (700 – 1000 words) of your paper that you want to discuss at the summer school. We expect the paper to be in the field of youth research and accept a variety of themes related to young people and their daily lives, such as social relations, transitions to adulthood, youth cultures and spaces, institutions governing young lives and intergenerational relations. We especially welcome papers focusing on the NYRIS 2024 theme Youth in a Fair and Just World. Accepted participants will share their manuscripts (suggested length is 5000–6000 words including abstract and references) with other participants and teachers one month before the summer school. Please, submit your application by filling in the form before December 29th, 2023.

Notification of acceptance will be sent by February 29th, 2024. For more information, you can contact the manager of the summer school Nadezhda Vasileva nadezhda.vasileva@tuni.fi.

Participation in the summer school is free of charge. The summer school covers the accommodation costs and meals. YOUNG journal can support few participants with a special need to cover a part of the traveling expenses. In this case, please specify your needs in the application.

The place and exact timetable of the summer school will be announced later.
